The teas of Laos

Welcome to the “In search of tea” chronicle, told by Carine Baudry, tea sourcer and expert at nunshen.

In search of tea

Welcome to this “In search of tea” chronicle, illustrated by the words of Carine Baudry, tea sourcer and expert at nunshen.

Fly away to Laos in search of two black teas whose history is as rich as their flavour.

We are very happy to present the n°901 – Tiger Black and n°902 – Honeybee Black teas. Two black teas with a very particular history that we are pleased to add to the nunshen range.

The Mekong Tea project

These two teas are the reflection of the Mekong Tea project, which came to life in 2019 in Laos. This programme is supported by Gret, the French Development Agency and the Laos Ministry of Agriculture, with the aim of supporting the Tea Cooperative of the Meung district in Laos.

The goal?

– To support small-scale farmers
– To strengthen the tea sector sustainably
– To facilitate organic and fair-trade certifications
– To showcase the producers’ know-how and the richness of their tea plants

It is in this context that our sourcer and tea expert Carine Baudry worked on a mission as an international expert within the project’s technical team. The opportunity to source our two superb black teas from Laos: n°901 – Tiger Black and n°902 – Honeybee Black

Hello Carine,
can you tell us about your relationship with the teas of Laos?

I am truly very happy to be able to present these two teas, after several months of work on this project with the NGO in Laos. It is a pleasure to be able to support these farmers in optimising their harvests and their processes in order to obtain the richest and most balanced teas possible.

When did you source these teas?

I sourced these teas during my last trip in April and May, where I spent some time in Laos. That’s when I had the joy of working with the whole NGO team on site to support, describe and optimise the different tea lots, and I am really delighted to be able to share them with you today.

Introduce us to the n°901 – Tiger Black

The n°901 – Tiger Black has a light structure. Without being rough or very bitter, it has a fine astringency that gives it body, presence and amplitude on the palate. In its aromatic notes, it incorporates a very honeyed world and unfolds on the palate in an extremely harmonious way.

It is a very interesting tea thanks to its two facets: structured and soft at the same time.

This tea can be enjoyed at breakfast but also paired with food. It is, for example, very interesting to pair with lamb in a slightly full-bodied jus, or a pan of vegetables in a full-bodied jus. The two really blend on the palate to give an extremely flavoursome aromatic expression.

Now introduce us to the 902 – Honeybee Black

The n°902 – Honeybee Black has deliberately undergone a slightly longer drying stage at a slightly higher temperature. This is what gives it subtly more pralined and more chocolatey notes. This process also brings it a roundness on the palate, a softness and a texture that is much more supple than the first. Its sweetness thus reinforces its softness and its indulgent character.

This tea is very interesting to enjoy during the day. In terms of pairings, it goes perfectly with cheeses, notably hard cheeses such as sheep’s cheeses. The Honeybee Black is also interesting to pair with the world of dessert, notably the world of slightly stewed notes as well as the whole world of peanut and nuts.

All that’s left for me is to wish you a lovely tasting!
