Genmaicha is a traditional blend of steamed green tea and toasted rice, originating from Kirishima, in southern Japan. According to legend, this tea takes its name from a servant called Genmai, who is said to have put rice in his master’s tea. Furious, the master supposedly cut off his head — before realising the tea was really rather good and naming it in tribute to his servant. Low in tannins, this tea is less astringent and bitter than other green teas. With its aromas of toasted cereals, its notes of freshly cut grass, lemon and lime zest, this superb blend is a pleasure to savour and the ideal introduction for anyone discovering green tea.
